Miramax Films Sues Quentin Tarantino Over Pulp Fiction NFTs

Miramax Films Sues Over Pulp Fiction NFTs

Director Quentin Tarantino announced this month at the NFT NYC Conference that he plans on launching 7 NFTs from exclusive scenes in the hit movie Pulp Fiction. Miramax Films has since filed a lawsuit against Tarantino this past Tuesday with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California citing breach of contract, trademark infringement and unfair competition.

“I’m excited to be presenting these exclusive scenes from ‘Pulp Fiction’ to fans,” Mr. Tarantino said in a news release, adding that the goal was to auction a collection of seven uncut “Pulp Fiction” scenes as “secret NFTs,” meaning their content would be hidden except to the owner1.

Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction NFts

Tarantino’s NFT collection will include NFTs associated with high-resolution scans from his original handwritten screenplay of Pulp Fiction, plus a drawing inspired by some element of the scene2. But Miramax alleges that Tarantino’s limited contractual rights for the film — including interactive games, live performances, and other ancillary media — don’t cover NFTs linked with the film’s screenplay. And it says that while Tarantino has the right to “publish” pieces of the screenplay, NFTs don’t fall under that umbrella.

Tarantino’s Team Responds to Lawsuit

Tarantino and his lawyer have responded to the lawsuits, and they are not backing down. Bryan Freedman, a lawyer for Mr. Tarantino, said that “Miramax is wrong — plain and simple.” Mr. Tarantino “has the right to sell NFTs of his handwritten script for ‘Pulp Fiction,’” he said, “and this ham-fisted attempt to prevent him from doing so will fail.”

Miramax is looking for a jury trial and unspecified monetary compensation. Stay tuned to our Instagram page for updates as this all unfolds.
