11 Tips For Goal Setting
Got Goals? We can’t turn off life’s everyday demands. This is why it is important to set goals. It makes the days and weeks easier because you are then able to break the weeks down into smaller bite-size pieces that can be achieved. While everyone has their own ways of goal setting I have found the following 11 tips to be the most successful.
1) Believe in the process
The first step to goal setting is having absolute faith and belief in the process. If you don’t have confidence in yourself and your abilities, then you might as well forget about your attempt to achieve your goals. If you are in doubt, look around you. Everything you can see began as a goal in someone’s head. Turn your thoughts into a reality.
2) Identify what you want.
Pretty simple right? Be sure to go beyond the surface and really consider what you want in your life, in your business, or your employees.
3) Consider the reality of those wants
Are the wants you’ve listed realistic and can they be obtained within a year’s time frame? If they are, consider the steps to get yourself or your business there.
4) Create a goal & write them down
Let’s be real, it can be pretty impossible to keep a track of all the demands and dreams we place out there. This is why it is recommended that if you have a goal, you should write it down. A Dominican University study showed that those who wrote their goals down accomplished significantly more than those that didn’t.
5) Use SMART goals.
SMART is a great acronym for writing goals: Specific (is it really clear what your goal is?); Measurable (how will you know you’ve achieved it); Agreed (especially important when setting with a team member); Realistic (can you achieve it?) and Timely (when will it be done by). When you reread your goals, check that they are SMART.
6) Be passionate
There should be some sort of passion, thought, or emotion around the goal. Having emotion behind a goal is motivating for you, your business, and your team and helps goals to materialize much faster.
7) Create A Plan
Take a look at your long-term goals to map out a 90-day plan. Doing this will help you to get as realistic as possible in terms of what you really want to achieve. For example, you want to increase your following on Facebook by 10% in the next 3 months. You and your team will create a 90-day plan on how you will reach that goal.
8) Plan Out Your Weeks
Everyone is different, but I like to plan out my days on Saturdays. It is easier for me to connect with my admin and spend about an hour reviewing our goals and map out what we need to get done over the week. After this, I usually then spend about 15mins each morning updating my ‘to-do list.
9) Manage Your Time
During the planning phase, it really helps to give some thought to how long things take. Historically I completely underestimate how long things take to get done. Having a project management tool and logging how long things are taking you can get much more realistic about the time needed to complete certain tasks.
10) Prioritize Downtime
When you are setting goals for yourself, business or team be sure to organize a break or “me time”. Breaks can be helpful to a business because it gives the mind a break and an opportunity to come back with a fresh mind and eyes.
11) Reward Yourself
Naturally, when you and your business achieve goals we push to continually improve, and drive greater performance. However, don’t forget to reward yourself and your team for achievements. Rewards can be as simple as a cup of coffee or if it’s a huge achievement you may want to treat your team to lunch.
